Organization profile

The Department of Humanities at Penn State College of Medicine is dedicated to advancing humanism in medicine and society.

Its mission is translational. Unlike humanities departments at liberal arts colleges and comprehensive universities, which focus on the foundational role of the humanities in general education and the training of disciplinary undergraduate and graduate students, Humanities at the College of Medicine applies humanistic methods and knowledge to the education of medical students and residents and to research projects in medicine and the biomedical sciences.

The department is known for its innovative scholarship on graphic medicine, end-of-life care, child-abuse education, medical controversies in the public sphere, Alzheimer’s care, nursing and nurse relationships, institutional betrayal and medical student professional identity formation.

Its faculty have expertise in literary study, cultural theory, clinical and research ethics, psychology, anthropology, nursing, creative writing, law and women’s studies.

Humanities is the institutional home for the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and the Research Consultation Service at the College of Medicine, as well as the Doctors Kienle Center for Humanistic Medicine and Center Stage Arts in Health.
