Research interests
Dr. Britta Thompson has published approximately 60 peer-reviewed articles in many prestigious medical education journals. In 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2018, she won awards for her research articles from the medical education journals, including the Silver Quill Award for the most downloaded and best research article in Medical Education. She has presented more than 200 peer-reviewed and invited oral and poster presentations at regional, national and international meetings.
Her training in educational psychology has allowed her to be the lead in the development of several peer-reviewed published instruments/scales.
Dr. Thompson’s research interests include team-functioning and team-performance outcomes in medical education; improving and using medical student reflection and self-assessment; improving faculty and resident teaching, evaluation and assessment skills and the teaching environment; teaching health systems sciences and systems thinking to health professionals; and facilitators, barriers and outcomes of educational innovations, including humanities innovations.
Teaching and educational interests
Dr. Britta Thompson enjoys facilitating small groups within medical education. She is the director of the clinician educator pathway for Penn State College of Medicine's MD program; she also teaches the Introduction to Medical Education and the Education Capstone courses for the pathway. In addition, Dr. Thompson is part of the core faculty for the college's Woodward Center for Excellence in Health Sciences Education.
She has mentored numerous faculty members, residents and students interested in medical education scholarship that has resulted in their peer-reviewed presentations and medical education research articles. She has won multiple awards for her teaching.
