Research interests

Dr. Carol S. Weisman is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Public Health Sciences at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, where she served as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs from 2009 to 2019.  Dr. Weisman is a sociologist and health services researcher who studies women’s health care and policy.  Her research has focused on women’s health care utilization patterns, access to reproductive health services including contraception and abortion care, and organizational models for delivering women’s health care.  Most recently, she has studied the impact of state and federal contraception coverage policies on the use of contraception and costs to the consumer.

Dr. Weisman's research has been funded by the NIH, AHRQ, CDC, PA Department of Health, The Commonwealth Fund, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Dr. Weisman has published over 160 scientific papers and was the sole author of a book, Women’s Health Care: Activist Traditions and Institutional Change (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998).  She has served on the Board of AcademyHealth and was a member of the founding editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal Women’s Health Issues, for which she served as Editor-in-Chief from 2003 to 2006 and as Associate Editor thereafter.  In 2011, she served on the Institute of Medicine Committee on Clinical Preventive Services for Women, which recommended preventive services later covered by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  Among several awards, she received the Excellence in Career Mentoring Award at the Penn State College of Medicine in 2020.

Dr. Weisman earned her B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology at Wellesley College, and her Ph.D. in Social Relations from the Johns Hopkins University.  She served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and the University of Michigan School of Public Health before moving to Penn State.
