Personal profile
Research interests
Dr. David Richard's research interests have focused on patient communication with an emphasis on motivational interviewing and shared decision-making. Longitudinal curricular development for medical students, physician assistant students and medical residents from initial communication skills to advanced communication skills has been the focus of much of his work. Additional efforts have targeted seasoned clinicians to promote patient-centeredness, motivational interviewing and shared decision-making in practice. Dr. Richard also has focused attention on professionalism, empathy and reflective practice for a wide range of medical professionals to be cognizant of in everyday practice.
Teaching and educational interests
Dr. David Richard teaches at Penn State College of Medicine year-round in the areas of preventive medicine, evidence-based medicine, communication skills and professionalism. He uses medical actors for advanced communication skills on a regular basis as a way to give feedback to the learners on their skillsets. He enjoys teaching and using point-of-care resources to showcase how to provide patients with the most up-to-date information to make informed decisions. He enjoys working with all learners to help promote patient-centered care and shared decision-making.
Clinical interests
Dr. David Richard's clinical interests are related to preventive care and the promotion of shared decision-making in practice. He feels that the patient is in the best position to make decisions about their care when they are well-informed using the latest guidelines and data and when their provider is listening to their concerns. Dr. Richard believes meeting the patient where they are in the decision-making process allows for open person-centered communication and lasting relationships.
