Research interests

Dr. Dongxiao Sun's research interest is focused on small molecule analysis in different matrices by HPLC-MS/mass spectrometry as well as drug and carcinogen metabolism and pharmacogenetics study, including samples from cells, tissues, blood, urine, saliva, food, soil and many other sources.

The mass spectrometry systems in Dr. Sun's lab include Waters Acquity UPLC-Sciex 4000 QTRAP, Sciex ExionLC-Sciex QTRAP 6500+ and Sciex ExionLC-Sciex Q TOF 5600.

The Sun lab develops and validates method for each assay, including sample pretreatment, instrument performance and data process. Sample pretreatment includes solid-phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, etc., and the small molecules analyzed are in wide varieties, including amino acids, keto acids, steroids, vitamins, neurotransmitters, peptides, different drugs and their metabolites, carcinogens, natural compounds, synthetic compounds and many other biomarkers.

The lab also conducts metabolism pathway studies focused on phase I and phase II enzyme metabolizing of small molecules, especially for pharmacogenetics.
