Research interests

Dr. Gisoo Ghaffari has been a faculty member at Penn State College of Medicine since 2008. Her primary areas of research interest include eosinophilic esophagitis and allergic skin disorders.

Dr. Ghaffari has been a principal investigator for two clinical trials. Her most recent trial is for a Regeneron-sponsored study on the efficacy and safety of dupilumab in adult and adolescent patients with eosinophilic esophagitis. She also studied the effect of beclomethasone dipropionate on inflammatory markers in adults with eosinophilic esophagitis in a project supported by an American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology junior faculty award.

In addition to her own research. Dr. Ghaffari serves as a member of the College of Medicine's medical student research committee.

Dr. Ghaffari has also lectured extensively on eosinophilic esophagitis regionally and nationally, including presentations at several recent American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology annual meetings.

Teaching and educational interests

Dr. Gisoo Ghaffari has been extensively involved in medical student, resident, fellow and faculty education at Penn State College of Medicine.

She is director of the Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. From 2013 to 2018, she served as a JEMS resident mentor. She is currently a resident academy coach.

Dr. Ghaffari has been course director of the allergy/immunology clerkship and the allergy/immunology elective for third- and fourth-year medical students since 2008. She is also the faculty liaison for career exploration and synthesis in allergy/immunology for third-year medical students (since 2018) and subspecialty director of the allergy/immunology rotation for internal medicine residents (since 2014).

Dr. Ghaffari is the society coach and adviser of the Foundations of Patient-Centered Care course for first-and second-year medical students and the society coach and adviser for third- and fourth-year medical students. She also lectures regularly on topics including transplantation immunology, pharmacology and allergy testing for medical students, as well as at allergy/immunology case discussions and weekly conferences with residents.

In addition to her teaching work, Dr. Ghaffari has served as a member of the Department of Medicine's mentorship program committee and promotion criteria update committee and as an interview for potential faculty members, fellows, residents and medical students.

Clinical interests

Since 2008, Dr. Gisoo Ghaffari has been an attending physician at both the allergy, asthma and immunology clinic and the allergy, asthma and immunology inpatient consult service at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. In this role, she supervises fellows, residents and medical students.

Dr. Ghaffari's clinical activities include taking care of patients with broad range of allergic and immunological diseases. Her specific areas of interest are eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders and allergic skin diseases. Her primary scope of expertise includes allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, food allergy, asthma, venom sting allergy, chronic urticaria and angioedema, mast cell disorders, anaphylaxis and immunodeficiency disorders.

Dr. Ghaffari also has specialized expertise in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, specifically eosinophilic esophagitis, as well as in atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and drug-induced rashes.

Dr. Ghaffari has developed clinical programs that include a quality assessment and safety monitoring of reactions to allergen immunotherapy, providing feedback to clinical staff for their daily patient care. She also established a patch test program for evaluation of allergic contact dermatitis and a food atopy patch test program as part of the evaluation for eosinophilic esophagitis. Her procedural experience includes testing for environmental, food, venom and drug allergies; pulmonary function tests; biologic treatments for severe asthma; aspirin desensitization; desensitization to antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents; immunoglobulin replacement; allergen immunotherapy; and venom immunotherapy.
