Research interests
Dr. James Grogan has a personal interest in neuromuscular research, notably in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS); telemedicine and remote monitoring; and clinical research for treatments in ALS and other neuromuscular disease.
Projects have included telemedicine and ALS during the COVID-19 pandemic; educational shifts during the pandemic; assessment of patient-reported outcome measures in nutrition and oropharyngeal dysfunction; and managing patients in multiple clinical trials.
Clinical interests
Dr. James Grogan's primary goals are the care of patients with ALS and other neuromuscular disorders, including myasthenia gravis, neuropathy, muscular and myotonic dystrophy and inflammatory myopathies. He works closely with other allied specialists and therapists at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center multidisciplinary ALS clinic, a specialized program utilizing several specialists in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, nutrition, psychology, social work and chaplaincy to better evaluate and treat the complex, changing needs of patients with ALS.
He also works with residents and students in a general neuromuscular clinic, holding virtual telemedicine clinics, treating patients hospitalized in Hershey Medical Center, and has a special interest in incorporating the vital services of the palliative medicine team into neurologic care.
