Research interests
Dr. Jeff D. Yanosky's research interests focus on understanding the health effects of air pollutants experienced at realistic levels by the general population. Because the primary weakness of studies evaluating effects of environmental exposures on health is poor exposure assessment, Dr. Yanosky’s research has focused on improving air pollution exposure assessment though the development of complex high-dimensional statistical models of air pollutant concentrations that include small-scale influences of nearby vehicular traffic air pollutant emissions, complex meteorology, land-use characteristics, chemical transport model output, and other data sources. Dr. Yanosky has conducted research on many air pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), elemental carbon (EC), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ultrafine particles (UFP), carbon monoxide (CO), coarse mode particles, PM10, and particulate-phase metals such as lead, manganese, copper, and zinc. He has developed GIS-based spatio-temporal statistical models that have been and can continue to be used to study health effects of short- and long-term exposure to many air pollutants. He is also interested in measurement of and patterns in personal exposure to air pollutants.
Dr. Yanosky has also conducted many studies of the health effects of air pollutants, including studies on non-accidental and cause-specific mortality, respiratory diseases such as lung cancer and asthma, cardiovascular disease and sub-clinical cardiovascular endpoints such as flow-mediated dilation, blood pressure/hypertension, and stroke, blood inflammatory markers, neurological conditions such as cognitive decline, psychological conditions such as depression, and other conditions such as epigenetic changes, obstructive sleep apnea, bone mineral density, kidney disease, ALS, sarcoidosis, type-2 diabetes, and others. Notably, Dr. Yanosky’s exposure assessment methods have been applied in the Nurses’ Health Study, Women’s Health Initiative, and many other studies. Researchers with health datasets interested in attaching air pollutant concentration estimates are invited to collaborate. Please email to request a CV.
