Dr. Jessica Butts’ research focuses on implementation of principles of the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) global health initiative. Her work is specifically focused on building and integrating a Physical Activity Vital Sign into standard ambulatory workflow. She is also currently part of a team studying how counseling for exercise can impact physical activity levels in rural areas.
Dr. Jessica Butts is the Associate Program Director of the Penn State Hershey Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. The bulk of her teaching efforts are in post-graduate medical education – specifically residency and fellowship. As a faculty member dual appointed in the Department of Family and Community Medicine as well as the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, she teaches clinical skills to a variety of medical students and residents as well as fellows. She is a recurring lecturer in the 1st, 2nd and 4th year undergraduate medical school curriculum as well as a frequent speaker at various local, regional and national educational conferences. She enjoys teaching on any and all topics related to care of the athlete, musculoskeletal care, as well as health promotion and disease prevention.
Dr. Jessica Butts practices full-spectrum family medicine in addition to sports medicine/non-surgical musculoskeletal medicine. She provides extensive primary preventative services in addition to management and prevention of chronic diseases while emphasizing physical activity and the exercise prescription. She enjoys evaluating and managing orthopedic injuries, sports-related concussions and providing ultrasound guided interventions.
