Research interests
Dr. Jonathan Stine is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine. As an internationally recognized liver expert with a research and clinical focus on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), he has authored more than 135 peer-reviewed papers, including multinational consensus guidelines for the American College of Sports Medicine and Exercise and Sports Science Australia, and has lectured across the United States and Europe.
Dr. Stine has been the recipient of multiple research grants and awards from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, American Cancer Society and National Institutes of Health.
His research has been featured by various media outlets including ABC, the Associated Press, Yahoo and STAT News. Since 2023, he has been recognized by Stanford University as being among the World’s Top 2% Scientists.
Clinical interests
Dr. Jonathan G. Stine is a transplant hepatologist and internationally recognized expert in liver disease with a primary clinical focus on MASLD and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). He founded and previously directed the Penn State Health Fatty Liver Program. He also is the former Penn State Health Liver Center Director of Research.
Dr. Stine is passionate about leveraging exercise and lifestyle interventions as foundational therapies for patients with metabolic liver disease, helping bridge the gap between emerging research and clinical application. With decades of experience as a thought leader in hepatology, Dr. Stine’s work is informed by participation in over 30 MASLD/MASH clinical trials and development of multinational consensus guidelines. His approach to care is both compassionate and innovative, focusing on empowering patients through personalized treatment strategies that target the root causes of liver disease. By combining his clinical expertise with a commitment to improving patient quality of life, Dr. Stine continues to set new standards for managing metabolic liver disorders.
