Research interests

Dr. Joseph Petfield is interested in improving patient safety and clinical outcomes in pediatric orthopaedic surgery. He has a particular interest in spine disorders, fractures, sports injuries and infections in children. He has an additional interest in the treatment and outcomes of infection after traumatic injury and maintains a research association with the U.S. Department of Defense in this regard.

Teaching and educational interests

Dr. Joseph Petfield enjoys mentoring and teaching learners at all levels, ranging from orthopaedic residents and colleagues to high school and primary school students. He has lectured regionally and internationally on orthopaedic topics.

He serves as a subject-matter expert on musculoskeletal infection for the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Group and serves as an adviser for undergraduate biomedical engineering research projects. 

Clinical interests

Dr. Joseph Petfield's clinical interests include spine disorders in children and adolescents, pediatric and adult orthopaedic trauma and sports injuries in children and young adults. He has an additional interest in telemedicine.
