Through her work as Associate Hospital Epidemiologist at Penn State Health, Dr. Kathleen Julian is interested in studies to assess and reduce the spread of multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria and MRSA, outbreak investigations, and interventions to decrease urinary catheter usage and improve disinfection of multi-use patient care equipment.

To complement her clinical care of recipients of solid-organ transplants and recipients of left ventricular assist devices, Dr. Julian is interested in epidemiologic studies of a range of infections amongst this population, including UTIs in renal transplant recipients.

Through creation of interactive online tutorials, Dr. Kathleen Julian seeks to develop innovative ways to teach medical students and other trainees about targeted use of antimicrobials.

Dr. Julian also enjoys supporting trainees in clinical epidemiologic studies of transplant infectious diseases and healthcare-associated infections. She encourages trainees to develop projects as a way to acquire depth of understanding about a specific clinical issue and to gain appreciation about the complexities and rewards of conducting research studies.

After completing a fellowship in infectious diseases at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Dr. Kathleen Julian joined the Infectious Diseases faculty in 2005. Throughout these subsequent years, Dr. Julian has been committed to serving as a consultant for the clinical diagnosis and management of infections among recipients of solid organ transplants and recipients of left ventricular assist devices.
