Dr. Michael McShane’s research has focused on patient and community advocacy, identifying health interventions designed with and for communities. This has included research on the implementation and outcomes associated with mobile health in rural communities. His work includes utilizing community based participatory research methodologies to ensure the voice of the community as well as to help to decide which services and educational interventions would benefit those within the community.
He and his team were recently awarded CTSI Bridges to Translation Pilot Funding in an across college collaboration focused on, “Connecting the Network: Establishing a Coalition Toward Increased Immunization Rates in Central Pennsylvania.” In addition, his research efforts have led to the external funding through the USDA Community Facilities Congressionally Directed Spending Grant to expand mobile clinic research, teaching and service operations in central Pennsylvania.
Dr. Michael McShane’s work as a clinician educator focuses on the intersections of education, health systems, and sustainability. He has a background in the theoretical underpinnings of teaching and learning which has led him to a career in medical education. While working administratively as part of the educational leadership team at our regional campus in State College, PA, his work has focused on the unique challenges of training future physicians, particularly in a setting where resources are limited for both patients and students.
In his role as the Assistant Director of Core Clinical Medicine, Dr. McShane serves as director of the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) at the regional campus, which includes leading the implementation of all clerkships. He is an Outpatient Preceptor for the Penn State Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. McShane has presented locally and regionally on mobile health, providing technical support to other mobile unit operations.
Dr. McShane is an alumnus of the Harvard Macy Institute's Program for Post-Graduate Trainees: Future Academic Clinician-Educators (2017), Lown Institute’s Right Care Educator Program (2017), Harvard Graduate School of Education's Critical Explorers Workshop (2017), and the Penn State Health Leadership Academy for Excellence in Academic Medicine (2019).
Dr. Michael McShane has seen the impact of under-resourced individuals and communities impact health, which has led him to pursue a deeper understanding of the interventions that could lead to a more sustainable future. With this work, he hopes to help clarify and share a more nuanced understanding of how sustainable health care delivery and education can be implemented. He has led the development of the LION Mobile Clinic, which provides health care resources to underserved populations in central Pennsylvania.
