Dr. Michael McShane’s initial research has focused on presenting a systems view to medications and the implications they may play on an individual’s health, combined with health systems education. The impact of the medication reconciliation process and the importance of training to reduce errors within the process led him to develop a curriculum for residency programs nationally.
Recently, Dr. McShane has led research on the implementation and outcomes associated with health interventions designed with and for communities, specifically a mobile health unit in rural Central Pennsylvania. The LION Mobile clinic program utilizes students across the educational continuum to extend service, education, and research. Dr. McShane recently completed a Penn State Social Science Research Institute Seed Grant “Towards Sustainable Rural Health Care Delivery: A Pilot Study to Explore Preventive Health Care Access Using a Mobile Health Clinic.”
Dr. Michael McShane’s work focuses on the intersections of education, health systems, and sustainability. He has a background in the theoretical underpinnings of teaching and learning which has led him to a career in medical education. While working administratively as part of the educational leadership team at our regional campus, his work has focused on the unique challenges of training future physicians, particularly in a setting where resources are limited for both patients and students.
In his role as the Assistant Director of Core Clinical Medicine, Dr. McShane serves as director of the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC) at the regional campus, which includes leading the implementation of all clerkships. In addition, he has served as the Health Equities Clerkship Co-Director at the at Penn State College of Medicine. He is an Outpatient Preceptor for the Penn State Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. McShane has presented locally and nationally on telehealth and virtual learning during the COVID pandemic.
Dr. McShane is an alumni of the Harvard Macy Institute's Program for Post-Graduate Trainees: Future Academic Clinician-Educators (2017), Lown Institute’s Right Care Educator Program (2017), and Harvard Graduate School of Education's Critical Explorers Workshop (2017).
Dr. Michael McShane has seen the impact of under-resourced individuals and communities impact health, which has led him to pursue a deeper understanding of the interventions that could lead to a more sustainable future. With this work, he hopes to help clarify and share a more nuanced understand of how sustainable health care delivery and education can be implemented. Dr. McShane is an alumni of the Penn State Health Leadership Academy for Excellence in Academic Medicine (2019).
