    Research interests

    Dr. Nasrollah Ghahramani's primary areas of research interest have included patient-centered studies regarding peer mentoring among patients with chronic kidney disease, perceptions of patients and physicians about transplant, and geographic disparities in transplant. Other areas of interest are acute kidney injury, kidney transplantation, use of methods to monitor graft survival and comparison of forms of induction immunosuppression.

    In addition to training and certification in internal medicine and nephrology in the ABIM Clinical Investigator Pathway, Dr. Ghahramani completed the NIH-sponsored K-30 MS program in clinical research. His mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K-23) focused on perceptions of patients and nephrologists about choice of transplant as a treatment modality in rural Appalachia. He has also served as a co-investigator on the NIH-sponsored Natural History of AKI Consortium (ASSESS-AKI). Dr. Ghahramani is the principal investigator of a PCORI-funded study, "Improving Patient Quality of Life and Caregiver Burden by a Peer-Led Mentoring Program for Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and Their Caregivers."

    Teaching and educational interests

    Dr. Nasrollah Ghahramani is involved in medical student, resident, fellow and faculty education. He mentors students, trainees and junior faculty in their research and career development. He serves on the Department of Medicine Residency Program Curriculum Committee and is chair of the Clinical Competency Committee and chair of the Department of Medicine Educational Council. He is also a member of the Department of Public Health Sciences Master of Science Program Committee. 

    Clinical interests

    Dr. Nasrollah Ghahramani's clinical activities are focused on care of patients with kidney disease. His specific area of interest is kidney and pancreas transplantation. He evaluates patients with chronic kidney disease for their transplant candidacy and manages their post-transplant care, including immunosuppression management. He also evaluates potential living kidney donor candidates.

    Dr. Ghahramani is the medical director of the kidney transplant program at Penn State. In addition to kidney transplantation, his other major area of clinical interest is acute kidney injury.
