  • Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS): Dr. Bascom is coinvestigator on "Educating Primary Care Doctors to Help Patients with Rare Diseases" and serves as part of the monthly EDS STRETCH project clinician research series through Penn State Project ECHO.
  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD): Dr. Bascom is director of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care Center, anchoring central Pennsylvania ILD care and research.

Her electronic health record-related research includes:

  • Pulmonary disease: Dr. Bascom is co-principal investigator of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)-funded Pulmonary CRG, associated with the COPD Foundation Patient-Powered Research Network. This group helps to incubate junior faculty projects in bronchiectasis, sarcoidosis, sickle cell disease, sleep apnea and the use of natural language processing to classify smoking status.
  • PaTH Network: Dr. Bascom is coinvestigator on "A PaTH Towards a Learning Health System in the Mid-Atlantic Region – Health System Leaders Demonstration Project." She is also the clinical lead for the PaTH Network's idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis cohort study.

Dr. Bascom's occupational and environmental health clinical research includes work on the interaction between allergic and non-allergic respiratory disease as well as epidemiologic studies of inhaled toxicants.

She participates or has participated in many clinical trials, including the National Institutes of Health's Pulmonary Trials Cooperative; Network Management Core (NEMO); INSIGHT (COPD); and CLEANup IPF. She has also done pharmaceutical work with Boehringer Ingelheim, MediciNova, MedImmune, InterMune, Genentech, Nitto-Denko and Galapagos.

Dr. Bascom also enjoys collaboration with basic science investigators on topics such as inhalation toxicology, toxicant dosimetry, markers and mechanisms of inhaled toxicant susceptibility, modified-risk tobacco broducts and bronchoscopy multimodality image guidance technology.

Funding for her work has come from NIH, PCORI, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, COPD Foundation, Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Penn State College of Medicine's Grace Woodward Grant, University of Michigan, Pennsylvania Department of Health and pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Bascom presents at regional health systems, national and international conferences. She is also a frequent speaker for departmental and divisional Grand Rounds at the College of Medicine and serves on the internal review committee and internal advisory board for Penn State Institute for Personalized Medicine.

Teaching and educational interests

Dr. Rebecca Bascom's educational activities center on the clinical training of fellows, residents and medical students in pulmonary medicine and the research mentoring of students, trainees and faculty.

Her didactic work includes presentations at divisional and departmental Grand Rounds, a monthly interstitial lung disease conference, occupational and environmental medicine lectures and resident conferences.

She also presents a number of case-based learning conferences. Dr. Bascom serves as the case conference director and facilitator for the interstitial lung disease/diffuse parenchymal lung disease multidisciplinary discussion, a twice-monthly conference attended by faculty from rheumatology, thoracic radiology, pathology and pulmonary medicine as well as fellows, residents and medical students.

Dr. Bascom is also involved in general mentoring of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship trainees and serves as a mentor in the College of Medicine's Junior Faculty Development Program. She is also actively engaged in education and mentoring through professional organizations such as the American Thoracic Society, where she established a yearly mentoring meeting for women in the Environmental, Occupational and Population Health Assembly and established annual mentoring lunch programs for women and for minority attendees at the international conference.

Dr. Bascom's patient-centered clinical research mentoring includes supporting faculty research project development in interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, sickle cell, sleep medicine, Ehlers-Danlos, gastrointestinal motility disorders and bronchiectasis.

Dr. Bascom is a mentor for the College of Medicine's Medical Student Research Project initiative, and previously led the pulmonary pathophysiology block for medical students, in which she developed a simulation module for understanding ventilator physiology. She facilitated small groups for the medical student Medical Ethics and Professionalism course.

She was also the course director for Penn State College of Medicine's community Mini Medical School event and developed and organized postgraduate courses and symposia for the American Thoracic Society International Conference, and is part of the College of Medicine's promotion and tenure committee.

Clinical interests

Dr. Rebecca Bascom is an attending physician, training fellows in pulmonary and critical care medicine. She personally sees patients in the pulmonary specialty clinic during four sessions per week, supervises the fellows' clinic and rotates on the inpatient pulmonary consultation service. She is director of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's pulmonary rehabilitation program and pulmonary fibrosis care center.

Her clinical care focuses on interstitial lung disease/diffuse parenchymal lung disease, occupational and environmental respiratory disease and Ehlers-Danlos syndromes.

She previously was director of the pulmonary specialty clinic, pulmonary function laboratory and respiratory care units and the medical intensive care unit and is a former chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine.
