PROJECT SUMMARY
Dr. Anand Patel is an academic hematologist/oncologist focused on developing clinical trials that investigate
targeted therapies in acute leukemia and high-risk myeloid cancers. His goal is to initiate and lead both
investigator-initiated clinical trials at his institution and multi-center NCI-sponsored cooperative group trials that
help to identify effective novel therapies for high-risk blood cancers. Dr. Patel is an integral member of the
University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCCCC); his roles include medical director of the
inpatient leukemia service, member of the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC), and member
of the Clinical and Experimental Therapeutics (CET) program. On a national level, Dr. Patel serves as the
University of Chicago’s representative for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s panels for acute
myeloid leukemia (AML) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Furthermore, he is an active member of
the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology leukemia committee, the MyeloMATCH older adult AML working
group, and the MyeloMATCH myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) working group. Dr. Patel is an active clinical
investigator; he has developed two investigator-initiated trials that are active to enrollment, serves as
institutional principal investigator for 3 additional studies, and is the study chair for a protocol in development
with the MyeloMATCH MDS working group and for a protocol being developed through the NCI’s Cancer
Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP). He also is an active co-investigator on several other protocols and
contributes meaningfully to enrollment on these studies. The UCCCC fully supports Dr. Patel in his career
development towards becoming a national leader in developing early-phase studies for acute leukemia and
high-risk myeloid malignancies while also becoming an institutional leader within our cancer center. The ECIA
award will serve to support the protected time necessary for Dr. Patel to complete his two investigator-initiated
studies, develop national studies through MyeloMATCH and CTEP, and continue to gain experience with being
an active member of our cancer center.
