Forward genetic prediction and testing of virulence loci in herpes simplex virus 1

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Project Narrative Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is a globally prevalent pathogen with a large and negative public health impact. Viral genetic differences likely impact the varied severity of disease outcomes seen in infected individuals, but the contributions of naturally-occurring viral variations to disease are not yet known. Using viral genome sequencing and phenotypic analysis in a murine ocular model of infection, we have detected viral genetic loci that are associated with high- vs. low-virulence – this project will test these virulence-gene associations, and their impacts on viral fitness and virulence.
