Description

Abstract / Summary $7000 is requested from the US Office of Naval Research to provide targeted financial support to the First International Conference on Model Integration across Disparate Scales in Complex Turbulent Flow Simulation (ICMIDS), to be held at Penn State University June 15-17, 2015. A conference description of the meeting appears at the end of this proposal. The maritime technical space is of high relevance here and we soliciting a large presence from the international community involved in oceanic turbulence simulation at the meso-, macro- and micro-scales. As with conferences we have run in the past, we wish to greatly reduce the registration fee for students so that they will only need to pay raw costs for food/banquet. The $7000 requested is specifically targeted at this. Based on the similarly sized ICNMMF conference we held two years ago (which also received ONR support), we anticipate a $350/person registration fee for the 2.5 day conference with 130-150 attendees. Of this we anticipate approximately 30 students if they were to all pay full registration. If we reduce the student registration fee to $100 we estimate 60 student attendees. The $7000 requested would enable this. (i.e., (60-30)*(350-100)=$7500?$7000) The requested funds will not be spent on food or social events. They will be specifically used to defray the $30,000 conference venue costs (meeting rooms, AV, staff personnel support), and this will enable us to reduced student registration to $100, in other words eliminate their incurred meeting venue costs.
