Description
Our objective is to understand the fundamental toughening mechanisms of ceramics that arise fromthe introduction of nano-pores, and to accelerate practical fabrication and use of these novel toughand strong materials. We will conduct multi-scale experimental and analytical parametric studiesto understand why and how pores (size, density, and distributions) and morphologies (amorphousvs. crystalline) influence shear banding initiation and extension, and thus resulting fracturetoughness.
