Description
The Foundation's Health Policy Fellowships Program was designed to allow midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists to experience a one-year residency in Washington, D.C., working for a member of Congress on health policy.Sheldon Fields, Ph.D., R.N., F.N.P.-B.C., is one of the ten fellows selected under the Health Policy Fellows 2009-2010 grant awards. Dr. Fields will participate in national health policy activities during the Washington, D.C., residential experience. He will join the other fellows in September 2009 for an intense three and one-half month orientation arranged by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The orientation provides the foundation of federal health policy-making and an overview of the relevant contemporary issues and perspectives. Following orientation, he will take on a full-time work assignment for up to one year in a congressional office or committee where he may develop legislative proposals, arrange hearings, meet with constituents and other stakeholders, and engage in a wide variety of high level forums and events. He has the option to remain in his placement past the 12-month period through the end of the legislative session in December. This option allows for completion of the full legislative cycle.
