Description
THE CENTRAL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO IMPROVE OUR ABILITY TO DISCOVER AND 'WEIGH' ROCKY EXOPLANETS INCLUDING THOSE IN THE HABITABLE ZONES OF NEARBY STARS BY COVERING SOME OF THE COSTS OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ON THE TOPIC 'THE THIRD WORKSHOP ON EXTREMELY PRECISE RADIAL VELOCITIES.' (EPRVIII) EPRVIII WILL ALSO FACILITATE NOVEL USES OF DATA FROM THE KEPLER K2 AND TESS MISSIONS WHICH PROVIDE INPUT TO STELLAR PHOTOSPHERIC GRANULATION MODELS THAT WILL DIAGNOSE THE DOMINANT SOURCE OF NON-EXOPLANETARY EPRV SIGNAL BELOW 1 M/S. THIS WORKSHOP WILL INCORPORATE THE OUTCOMES OF THE NEXSS-FUNDED 2016 ASPEN SUMMER WORKSHOP APPROACHING THE STELLAR ASTROPHYSICAL LIMITS OF EXOPLANET DETECTION: GETTING TO 10 CM/S. THIS WORKSHOP FOCUSED ON THE PHYSICAL LIMITS OF EPRV WORK AND FOR THE FIRST TIME ENGAGED THE PROBLEM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF HELIOPHYSICS. ALL OF THIS ADVANCES ONE OF THE THREE PRIMARY SCIENCE OBJECTIVES FOR THE DECADE PER THE 2010 DECADAL REVIEW: SEEKING NEARBY HABITABLE PLANETS . THIS ALSO SUPPORTS NASA ASTROPHYSICS DIVISION S GOAL TO DISCOVER AND STUDY PLANETS AROUND OTHER STARS AND EXPLORE WHETHER THEY COULD HARBOR LIFE AND THE NEXSS GOAL TO INVESTIGATE THE DIVERSITY OF EXOPLANETS AND TO LEARN HOW THEIR HISTORY GEOLOGY AND CLIMATE INTERACT TO CREATE THE CONDITIONS FOR LIFE.
