Abstract

This chapter summarizes the fundamentals of film capacitors and presents a general review of recent efforts on the development of dielectric polymers with high-energy density, with emphasis on polymer structures, dielectric properties, energy densities, and more importantly the correlation between these elements. These developments include biaxially oriented polypropylenes, poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based ferroelectric polymers, high-performance aromatic polymers, and polymer nanocomposites. The chapter concludes with a discussion of scientific issues that remain to be address as well as an outlook for the future polymer capacitors.
