Abstract

Three-dimensional (3-D) vision systems play an important role in many applications such as robot guidance, object recognition, visual inspection, and autonomous vehicles. Although the field is still in the early stages of development, it is emerging as one of the most important new technologies. The most commonly used approaches for extracting 3-D information are: time-of-flight which includes laser and ultrasound, structured light which includes striped and patterned lighting, passive triangulation which includes binocular and trinocular, and passive monocular methods which include focusing and shading. This paper describes some of these techniques and discusses their applications.
