Abstract
A case study of the application of Fuzzy Linguistic Control (FLC) to the control of a small furnace used by oil industries in the evaluation of drill samples is presented. Provided with the furnace and necessary hardware, we were able to develop a FLC for the furnace to perform within the constraints set before use. The performance of the FLC is compared with that of a previously and independently developed Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller. The adaptive nature of fuzzy control to compensate for variations in the process dynamics is addressed. A global tuning strategy using meta rules is presented. As a part of the study, the use of a software package, LabView by National Instruments, as a development tool was evaluated. As a prelude to the development of the FLC, a general purpose tool for developing fuzzy logic applications was begun. The results of the study reveal that the fully integrated LabView package and the work done to date on the general purpose tool demonstrate that a considerable amount of time is saved in the development process of the FLC from initial concept to complete installation of the controller into the product.
