Abstract
A general theory is developed for isothermal diffusion in purely viscous binary fluid mixtures. A rigorous basis is formulated for a general, linear theory, the nature of wave propagation during a diffusion process is examined, and a simple, consistent second-order theory of diffusion is developed.
