In this paper, a new highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber (HN-DSF) with an effective area of 9.3 μm2 is presented. This innovative HN-DSF has a unique triple-cladding structure, which offers not only a large nonlinear coefficient, but also low attenuation, low splicing, and bending losses. It is a very suitable candidate to implement an all-fiber wavelength converter via four-wave mixing (FWM).
