Abstract
In 1980, significant amounts of overtime and delays in routine instrument maintenance, specimen analysis, and result reporting convinced us that our laboratory needed more technical staff. The hospital administrator heard us out but called first for an independent management engineering study to see how well we were using the staff we had. Trials, tribulations, and a few triumphs emerged from a two-year study of this laboratory by outside consultants.
