Abstract
The effect of overaging on the mechanical properties of an aluminum matrix composite with silicon carbide particles (2009 Al/SiC/15p MMC) was studied. Test specimens were fabricated from a rolled billet and then aged in oil or air over a range of times and temperatures prior to mechanical testing. It was found that overaging led to a decrease in material strength (and hardness). However, it had no appreciable effect on the impact resistance of the material. The samples aged in an oil bath had a similar degradation of mechanical properties to those aged in air under the same conditions. Furthermore, it was also found that the hardness of the material continually decreases as the aging temperature is incrementally increased up to 290 °C.
