Abstract

This article presents an adaptive control scheme for a three-phase voltage source converter (VSC) used as a STATCOM. The novelty of the method lies in the derivation of the adaptive control input and parameter update laws using the nonlinear model of the VSC with uncertainties. It is proven using the Lyapunov stability theory that the suggested method ensures asymptotic state tracking for the VSC's dc-bus voltage while generating the compensated reactive power. Hardware-in-the-loop and experimental implementations using a TI high-voltage evaluation board, C2000 controller boards, PLECS, and RT-Box system are employed to demonstrate the controller's superior performance.
