Abstract

A potential vorticity mechanism for sub-tropical cyclogenesis (STCG) and tropical transition was discussed. The first stage of STCG is identified with the intensification of pre-existing lower and upper PV anomalies by baroclinic instability. In the second stage, the amplified upper trough PV anomaly becomes cut off from the mean flow, via Rossby wave-breaking. In the third stage these cut-off features become embedded in a region of much greatly reduced of negligible vertical shear.
