N2 - Daylight-responsive dimming systems currently considered in scientific research and commercial applications predominantly restrict themselves to the control of a single dimmed zone. This paper explores a multi-zone approach to controlling daylight-responsive dimming circuits. The conceptual basis for a generalized, optimal multi-zone dimming scenario is introduced by building on the concept of conventional single-zone dimming. Performance of an optimized multi-zone dimming system is compared with that of a single zone dimming system in the context of a daylight delivery system with sidelighting. The relevance of the two optimized, multi-zone dimming algorithms created by the authors is discussed with regards to the development of a real-world multi-zone dimming control strategy.
