Abstract
The mental health of construction workers is a critical issue, as they face many unique challenges such as high-pressure environments, long working hours, and strenuous physical demands on the job. This study employed a qualitative approach to investigate construction workers' perceptions of the mental health challenges they are subjected to in the workplace and to devise strategies to overcome them. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 construction managers, engineers, and tradesmen, and a thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The results revealed five themes: stigma and cultural norms, workplace stressors, role-specific challenges, lack of support and recognition in the workplace, and the need for a supportive climate. Strategies for improving their mental health, such as workshops to address stigma, peer networks, and targeted mental health policies, were identified. The findings of this study aim to assist policymakers, employers, and industry stakeholders in addressing the mental health challenges and improving the wellbeing of the construction workforce.
