Abstract
A study was conducted to explore whether reduced iron precipitates formed in the presence of dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria (DIRB) and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) can degrade perchloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE) and cis-dichloroethylene. The surface area, morphology, and reactivity of reduced iron precipitates formed in the presence and absence of anaerobic bacteria were compared. Pure cultures of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 were used as model SRB and DIRB, respectively. Chemically synthesized FeS reduced TCE to acetylene over about 1 mo. Little reduction of PCE or TCE was observed with chemically synthesized carbonate, sulfate, and chloride green rusts.
