    Abstract

Increasing interest in absorption heat pumps has led to research on new working fluids. In this work, the thermodynamics of binary solutions is applied to a simple heat pump model to determine which type of solution optimizes thermal performance for a given refrigerant (ammonia). It is found that although solutions with negative deviations from Racult's law enhance the performance, there is a limit as to how strongly the solution should negatively deviate. The dependence of the refrigerant activity coefficient on temperature and concentration is also studied, and the ranges that optimize heat pump performance are indicated.
