Abstract
By recent numbers, a little under half of US surgeons surveyed are employed in an academic surgical practice. Such a practice generally involves engaging in clinical surgery, research, and teaching. The service component of this kind of practice may include administrative or leadership roles. While academic surgeons traditionally earn a lower salary than do surgeons in private practice, they often report greater overall job satisfaction.
