Abstract

Two types of Acoustic Emission (AE) are possible in piezoelectric/electrostrictive actuators. One is the so-called normal AE, occurring when a piezoelectric actuator is driven by a bipolar electric field, and the other is an abnormal AE, occurring during actual breakdown of the actuator. The abnormal AE signal may be a good indicator for predicting the electrical or mechanical breakdown of the device.
