Abstract
An adaptive system for robotic welding of aluminum is presented. Called ARTIST (Adaptive Real-Time Intelligent Seam Tracker), the vision-based system is based on a PC-AT-compatible microcomputer and a Unimate 760 Series six-axis articulated arm using a VAL II controller, interfaced via an R5-232 link. The software is written in C, and uses a multiple-pass approach combined with an expert system for recognition and decisions at junctions, tacks, or ends of seams.
