Abstract

Polypropyene/aluminum laminates have been demonstrated a noval successful bonding technique between two material surfaces via modification with polypropylene cohexenol copolymer (4% OH-groups). Laminates bonded with PPH show an extraordinary 7-10 fold increase in peel strength over acid etched samples. Chemical interaction between the oxide/hydroxide layer on the etched Al and reactive sites in the copolymer, together with mechanical interlocking due to polymer flow into pits on the Al surfaces, are prominent factors in achieving maximum adhesion. Cohesive failure is the primary failure mode in peeled samples: the fracture path propagates within PP layers and usually at a depth of over 10 μm. Extremely high peel enrgies of ≈12000 N/m were found for drawn PP/Al samples whose bond strength are greater than those for epoxy/Al.
