Abstract

Several studies were carried out to investigate the feasibility of adjustable prosthetic sockets using embedded shape-memory alloy (SMA) wire. This method is believed to reduce replacement costs and minimize secondary medical problems due to poor fit, and improve overall patient satisfaction with the prosthesis. Preliminary tests using Nitinol SMA wire on a surrogate socket have demonstrated that a diametral reduction of 4% is possible.
