Abstract
Adolescent medicine is a subspecialty of pediatrics dedicated to the care and guidance of adolescents as they transition from childhood into adulthood. In this chapter, the authors discuss the history of adolescent medicine and the things that make the subspecialty of adolescent medicine unique from general pediatrics. They also discuss skills that are essential to establishing rapport and improving communication with adolescents. Furthermore, the authors deliberate reasons for choosing a career in adolescent medicine and discuss fellowship training and factors to consider in choosing a fellowship.
