Aggregation

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Soil aggregation is the organization and binding of soil particles into distinct units that can be separated by the application of energy to soil. When increasing levels of energy are applied, aggregates of most soils break down into smaller aggregates in a stepwise manner. Conceptual models have been formulated to explain this apparent hierarchy of soil aggregation. Different binding agents play roles at specific hierarchical levels. In this entry, the predominant model of aggregate hierarchy and known aggregating agents are discussed.
