Abstract

Although a complex topic, airway management remains one of the most fundamental skills necessary in the initial evaluation and resuscitation of surgical patients. It is vital to evaluate the patient for anticipated challenges in airway management, develop a logical step-wise approach to airway intervention, and be prepared to recognize and respond appropriately to failures in those interventions in order to prevent catastrophic outcomes.
