Abstract

The Albergo dei Poveri in Naples was one of the largest hospices for the poor constructed in Europe. It was built as a massive demonstration of royal charity, offering urban mendicants food and shelter along with training in a trade and religious instruction. Designed by Ferdinando Fuga, who shepherded the project through three different planning stages, it became a model of rigorous architectural order, and featured an innovative five-nave church at its core.
