Abstract

This article represents an overview of the literature on substance abuse among older adults. It begins with a review of the literature on alcohol use and abuse among older adults, which represents the greater bulk of available information, followed by a review of the literature regarding prescription and illicit drug abuse within this population. Additionally, this article details demographic variations in older adult substance abusers. Recommendations for future research are offered.
