Abstract

Direct evaporation in a CO2 laser trap was done to achieve degeneracy in a mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of 6Li, yielding the first all optically produced degenerate Fermi gas. Degeneracy was obtained by forced evaporation, accomplished by continuously lowering the trap depth and then adiabatically recompressing to full depth. The results achieved showed high evaporation efficiency χ ≡ ln(ρfi)/ln(Ni/Nf).
