note = "Funding Information: and 11 it is about 120 base pairs (bp), whereas for high risk types 16 and 33 it is about 200 bp and for type 18 about 100 bp. We report here a preliminary clinical evaluation of this new method in 107 high-risk women attending a sexually transmitted diseases clinic in Sydney. Exfoliated cells were collected by a saline lavagei.2 during a clinical evaluation that included a Papanicolaou smear, colposcopy, and cervicography. The PCR test showed that 57 women were infected with HPV (table). As has generally been found, the low-risk HPV types were the most prevalent with a lower proportion of specimens positive for types 16 (and/or 33) and still fewer for type 18. About one-third of the patients were HPV positive but lacked clinical indications and the HPV test may be detecting preclinical or latent infection in these patients.
