Abstract

This paper' explores benefits of using an adaptive rate technique for transmission of packets over a wireless medium. Primary concern is to send packets at a variable rate that not only satisfies performance reliability requirements but also maximizes the network throughput. Analysis has been carried out for a slow block-fading channel with a perfect knowledge of channel fading on the transmit side. This can represent a fixed wireless channel when there is a high-gain antenna at least at one end of the link. Analysis of spectral efficiency, outage, throughput and delay indicates that an adaptive rate technique is superior to a comparable fixed rate system. Therefore, additional complexity due to the adaptation is well justified.
