N2 - Friction/sliding and rattle/impact induced noises represent a concern for the automotive industry because they affect both the consumer's quality perception and warranty expense. Automotive engineers judiciously select mating material pairs in an effort to avoid unexpected objectionable noises. This paper presents an evaluation of various materials (polyvinyl chloride (PVC, or interior grade vinyl)) door trim panel covering and painted steel used in the automotive sector and using a friction tester capable of measuring acoustic response to identify noises that can be produced while undergoing frictional sliding. The first part of this paper is designated for friction sliding induced noise.
