Abstract
This article provides a rationale for using affordances of online photo galleries and social networking technologies to promote collaborative interpretations of visual culture. We describe an online photo gallery designed to enhance visual literacy and understanding of visual culture via (a) efficient display for sharing visuals, (b) navigation through visuals without biasing the consumer regarding interpretation, and (c) categorization of visuals according to cultural messages they convey to the consumer. The gallery enables students to discuss the visuals by submitting their interpretations, reading others ' interpretations, and offering evolving interpretations. We describe applications in the context of two university courses.
