Abstract

Equations are derived for the far-zone radiation patterns of a center-fed helical microstrip antenna of finite length using the reciprocity theorem. Different structures of varying pitch of the helix, mounted on a cylindrical platform, were modeled using a method of moments (MoM) code. Compared to the models, in cases of low pitch, the current on consecutive turns of the helix, obtained with the reciprocity theorem, deviates somewhat from the ideal due to mutual coupling effects. Such effects are minimal if the pitch is such that the spacing between consecutive turns is in the order of a half-wavelength or greater.
